EMBROIDERIES

The practice of embroidering implies patience and discipline, and it could even be thought as a meditative act. Through it I translate my ideas, feelings and reflections. In its repetitive movement, I question my constructed ideas and I also exercise new ones. Inspired by Mexican embroidery and the precolombine textile tradition, research on its historical uses (e.g.: archive of memory) and transformations are fundamental to my practice challenging the relationship between the traditional and the contemporary.

SHODŌ SERIES

Fascinated by ancient Japanese calligraphy, Shodō is one of the oldest and most profound traditional art forms in Japan. The world of calligraphy has a long rich history and it is both a skill and an aesthetic. Its main focuses are simplicity, beauty and a mind-body connection. Shodō’s true calligraphy is achieved by applying the elements of art, line, shape and space. The real mastery of all these elements of art and skill requires a lot of practice and connection with your inner self.

TOMONI PROJECT

Triggered by the Shōdo Series, Japanese calligrapher Eriko Aiura and Carla Freschi started a long-distance collaborative project. Tomoni means ‘together’ and symbolizes the modified conditions of togetherness and the contradiction of working apart in such an atypical context. Based in Osaka, Eriko created a series of drawings that actually mean ‘together’, which Carla embroidered later in Argentina. Tomoni’s can be commissioned with a customized meaning.
