EMBROIDERIES

The practice of embroidering implies patience and discipline, and it could even be thought as a meditative act. Through it I translate my ideas, feelings and reflections. In its repetitive movement, I question my constructed ideas and I also exercise new ones. Inspired by Mexican embroidery and the precolombine textile tradition, research on its historical uses (e.g.: archive of memory) and transformations are fundamental to my practice challenging the relationship between the traditional and the contemporary.

NYMPHAEA SERIES:
AN ODE TO MY FIRST LOVE

The Nymphaea series is a homage to Claude Monet’s waterlilies. It is because of him that I have always wanted to be an artist: in a child’s world, imagination is reality. Nymphaea represents a deconstructed interpretation which enhances the beauty of raw, unfinished content in an effortless manner, finding natural balance between movement and calmness.

DOODLE SERIES:
INTUITIVE DECISIONS

“I took a dot for a walk” said once Paul Klee. Triggered by that, I started a sensitive exploration of lines and subtlety reflecting my own decisions as a human. I believe that the universe will give you the exact same challenges in different versions until you master it and it is one of the most important universal laws we can learn about the nature of reality. The Doodle series is a primitive and intuitive process which implies error and repetition. By action we create clarity and by the act of embroidering I create my own path as an artist and as a woman.

SHODŌ SERIES

Fascinated by ancient Japanese calligraphy, Shodō is one of the oldest and most profound traditional art forms in Japan. The world of calligraphy has a long rich history and it is both a skill and an aesthetic. Its main focuses are simplicity, beauty and a mind-body connection. Shodō’s true calligraphy is achieved by applying the elements of art, line, shape and space. The real mastery of all these elements of art and skill requires a lot of practice and connection with your inner self.

MANIFESTO SERIES:
THE POWER OF WORDS

I have always written and not too many people know this. I‘ve written love letters, break up emails, meaningful phrases in my agenda to name a few. I even wrote a novel when I was 13 that made some of my friends cry (a love story that I still keep somewhere in the depths of my computer). I write when I’m angry but also when I’m inspired. Sometimes I throw my notes straight away after I finish (yes, I still write on paper). Sometimes I share them with someone and sometimes I just keep them for myself as a reminder. Words are powerful and the simple act of writing makes me feel powerful too because I don’t miss a single thing I want to say. I can finally put out there my thoughts, literally take them out of my mind, take some distance and end up in conclusions. Words can hurt and can heal; and can also make us grow and move on. Isn’t that liberating? That’s what my Manifesto series are about.

COSMOS SERIES:
OUR OWN UNIVERSES

This series takes my dearest childhood memories as inspiration: the holidays spent on board of our family sailboat at Barra de San Juan; one of Uruguay’s best kept secrets. As it is part of a national park, there is no accommodation nearby. Therefore, not a single light for several kilometers around. We used to stock up on provisions for many days and adventured ourselves into nature: dips in the river, picnics on the beach, walks through the forest, and the best part, shooting star sighting by night. I can recall how tiny I felt under the sky and wondered about the universe: How big is it? What is beyond? Is there any sort of energy from the universe that makes us who we are? Many years later, I started to look for answers. During that journey I ran into people who taught me to trust the universe and made me understand that everything happens for a reason in the process of becoming who we are. That being said, every person has a story to tell, with its own history and its own appreciation and perspective of the world. Acknowledging the universe as a complex and intriguing system, I intend to materialize everyone’s interpretations by portraying those shooting star choreographies. The Cosmos Series represents everyone’s particular stories and experiences. In other words, our own universes.
